Advent 2024

Season of Advent

The season of Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning coming or visit, begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians.

During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for, and need of, forgiveness, salvation, and a new beginning. Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward to anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming.

The Christmas season begins at sundown on December 24 (Christmas Eve) and lasts until Epiphany of the Lord (January 6). This period is popularly referred to as the Twelve Days of Christmas.

A list of the events, activities, services, and volunteer/giving opportunities at First Church this Advent season are listed below. Make plans to worship with us at First Church as we anticipate the coming of Christ.

Lighting of the Jesus and the Children Window
Wednesday, December 11 | 5:45pm (15 min.)| Front of the Sanctuary
In the 20’s & 30’s, First United Methodist Church of Pensacola was known as “The Church with the Lighted Window” in our community. Historically, the main Jesus and the Children window, on the south side of the Main Sanctuary, was illuminated every evening. Over the past few months, new high-impact glass has been installed over each of our historic stained glass windows, which will allow more light inside the church and provide greater clarity of each window from the outside.

Join us on Wednesday, December 11 at 5:45pm in the front of the Sanctuary as we illuminate Jesus and the Children Window once again! Pastor Geoffrey will deliver a short message with music from the Sanctuary Choir.

Caroling
