TRADITION RICH • MODERN WORSHIP
ICON is one of our three Sunday morning services at First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, blending the depth of traditional liturgy with modern music. It’s a welcoming space for young families, lifelong churchgoers, the curious, the uncertain, and those healing from past church experiences.
Celebrate the 17th anniversary of ICON as we relaunch this beloved service in its beautiful new home — The Upper Room, a newly renovated worship space featuring a night-sky mural by a local artist and modern stained-glass windows telling the story of creation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a church person to attend ICON?
No. ICON is a welcoming space for people who are curious, uncertain, or who may have been hurt by the church. Wherever you are on your faith journey, you belong here.
What should I wear?
Dress is casual. Come as you are — jeans, dresses, and everything in between are common.
How long is the service?
The service lasts about an hour and five minutes.
What kind of worship is ICON?
ICON blends traditional Christian worship with a modern feel. You’ll hear Scripture, pray together, participate in responsive readings, share Communion, and experience music rooted in the deep traditions of the church while engaging the voices of contemporary artists.
Our worship follows an ancient pattern shaped by the early church. You don’t need to understand the meaning of every prayer, symbol, or movement to take part. ICON’s modern setting invites a new generation to encounter the church’s ancient liturgy in a way that is accessible, meaningful, and alive today.
Will I be expected to participate?
You’re invited, but never pressured. There are moments of responsive reading and prayer, and all the words are provided so you can follow along comfortably.
What is the music like?
Music is woven throughout the service and reflects a blend of familiar favorites, modern hymns, and newer worship music. Our music is led by a full band — including drums, bass, electric guitar, and more — alongside a baby grand piano and organ, bringing together contemporary sound and traditional depth. You’re always welcome to sing along, or simply listen and take it in.
Is there something for children during worship?
Yes. All children are welcome and encouraged to attend worship with their families. During the service, children are invited forward for a short, age-appropriate message that connects with the worship theme for the day.
We also provide care for children who have not yet entered kindergarten in our fully staffed nursery, located in the Education Building. Nursery care is available for infants through 5-year-olds during worship and the Sunday School hour. Please see an usher or greeter for assistance.
What is the sermon like?
The sermon is typically 15–18 minutes and conversational in style. Each week, the message is rooted in the lectionary — a shared schedule of Scripture readings used by churches around the world — helping connect our worship to the broader Christian tradition. Sermons explore Scripture in a thoughtful, accessible way and invite us to live out our faith in daily life and in the community.
Do I have to take Communion?
No — but you are welcome to. We celebrate Communion every Sunday because Jesus invites us to share this meal whenever we gather.
• You do not need to be a member or baptized
• Communion is received by intinction (dipping bread into grape juice)
• Gluten-free bread is available
• If needed, communion can be brought to you in your seat
Where is ICON located?
ICON meets in The Upper Room, located on the 2nd Floor of The Consulate at the corner of Palafox and Wright Streets — the building to the left of our Main Sanctuary.
The Upper Room a breathtaking space created for worship, art, and community. Here, ancient faith meets modern expression beneath a night-sky ceiling, surrounded by stained glass and immersive visual elements that help bring worship, Scripture, and music to life.
