At First Church we believe that growing and learning is a lifelong process. In order for us to be challenged in faith, grow in our understanding of the Bible, and become followers of Christ, we invite everyone to actively engage themselves in the Christian Education opportunities we offer.

Wednesdays

Joe Harrell Men’s Bible Study

The Joe Harrell Men’s Bible study gathers for breakfast, followed by a devotion and presentation on a variety of topics. The Bible Breakfast has continually met for 40+ years and is always looking for new members. Led by Mike Vance. 

Dad’s Bible Study

All dads are invited for a time of Bible study and Christian fellowship with other dads. This study meets at Panera Bread by Cordova Mall. Led by Bill Bond. 

Women at the Well

This book and Bible-based discussion group for women of all ages studies a variety of topics throughout the year. Led by Cindy Smith.  

Bible with Brandon

Rev. Brandon Bures, Associate Pastor, leads participants in a weekly in-depth discussion of the upcoming lectionary passages for Sunday. Lunch is available for purchase. Led by Rev. Brandon Bures.

Weight Watchers

Senior Pastor’s Bible Study

In Depth Study

In 1920, science fiction writer H.G. Wells published The Outline of History,an attempt “to tell the whole story of life and mankind as it is known today” in a unified, progressive narrative. In 1925, G.K. Chesterton published his rebuttal,The Everlasting Man. According to Chesterton, “Christendom has had a series of revolutions and in each one of them Christianity has died. Christianity has died many times and risen again; for it had a God who knew the way out of the grave.” Weekly, discussion-based classes. Led by David Ramsey.

Prayer: Nourishment for our Relationship with God

In this class we will discover and explore how prayer nourishes our relationship with God. Led by Donell Seager.

The Daniel Plan

The Daniel Plan teaches simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into a person’s lifestyle and helps them understand the kind of foods God created to keep them fit and strong. This 6 week study will explore five key concepts for optimal health that promote success: faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. Led by Lisa Bond 

Christian Meditation

Meditation is an ancient Hebrew and Christian method of opening ourselves to the Lord. Bring your meditation cushion or sit in a chair and practice this ancient discipline of waiting on the Lord. Led by David Boyd 

The Road Back to You

What you don’t know about yourself can hurt you and your relationships and maybe even how you make your way in the world. It can also keep you in the shallows with God. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you’re stuck in the same ruts? Led by Donell Seager. 

Parenting on Point

Join other parents as we explore ways to more effectively parent the children in our lives. 

Financial Peace University

Dave’s proven money class will show you step-by-step how to create a budget, pay off your debt, make wise spending decisions, and save for the future. Led by Geoff and Stephanie Cook. 

Thursdays

Yoga
9:00am  |  Education Building, Big Room, E203
All are invited to this hour yoga class led by certified yoga instructor, Lynn Jackson. This class is made for all ages and focuses on refreshment, restoration, and renewal. Cost is $30 per 6 week session.

Mom’s Bible Study

All moms are invited to join us for our weekly Moms Bible Study. Come join us for great discussions, friendship and faith building. Led by Lisa Bond. 

God’s Stories Group
2nd Thursday  |  10:00am  |  Perry Home, Parlor
This group reads and discusses short stories from Christian and secular perspectives. All are invited to this study sponsored by the United Methodist Women. Led by Janice Anderson. 

Study of Prayer
4th Thursday  |  10:00am  |  Perry Home, PH101
This group participates in various studies on prayer with a focus on growing in faith through prayer. This group is sponsored by the Ruth Braden and Eleanor Nichols group of the United Methodist Women. Led by Nancy Shealy. 

Addiction and Grace
Begins October 18  |  6:00pm  |  Perry Home, PH101
This class, open to the community, will offer “an inspiring and hope–filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are.” We will use Gerald May’s book, Addiction and Grace to examine the “processes of attachment” that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. In it, he details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, responsibility, performance, and intimacy. Led by The Rev Dr Jim White. 

Fridays

Marriage Class
First Friday  |  September 7 – April 5  |  5:30pm  |  Lower Sanctuary, S117
Once a month, parents are invited to join us for a video Bible Study series  to learn how to cultivate and enjoy a beautiful marriage rooted and grounded in Christ.  Some of the topics will include what it means to have a shared vision, finding your true identity in Jesus, practices to confront unspoken expectations and conflict, allowing challenges to knit you together, keeping proper priorities while raising a family and spending time together.  After class, parents will be given the opportunity to enjoy dinner together while we have a program for children. Led by Geoff and Stephanie Cook.

Sundays

Disciple Fast Track
Starts August 19  |  9:15am  |  The Wright Place, 2nd Floor, WP205
This class is ideal for busy people who want to fit a comprehensive Bible study into their schedule. This class includes weekly video clips and encourages participants to do short, daily readings. Classes meet for 12 weeks on the Old Testament and then can continue with a 12 week class on New Testament.

If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, this group can help you through this challenging time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. Led by John Griffin. 

When Helping Hurts

As part of the 2018 Year of Missions, this class will look at a biblically based framework concerning the root causes of poverty and its alleviation. We will explore “Who are the poor?”, “Should we do relief, rehabilitation or development?” and “How can we help people effectively here and abroad?”.

Centering Prayer

This community group is an open group that meets weekly on Monday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 to facilitate the deepening of our relationship with God and each other through the practice of centering prayer in order that we might be transformed into Christ’s likeness for the transformation of the world. Led by Donell Seager. 

Faith and Fitness

A fitness and accountability group which focuses on strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and core exercises. Led by Denise Van Atta. 

The Holy Spirit and You

Who is the Holy Spirit? How am I to relate to Him? “The Holy Spirit is that gift whereby even in a world at war, we may live in peace, our enemies can become friends, and even in a culture of lies, we can tell the truth. ‘Come, Holy Spirit!’ is the first and last prayer of the church, our only hope in life and death. In receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can begin the adventure of discipleship and end all our attempts at self-justification.” Join Rev. Ken Autrey as he explores the book, The Holy Spirit, by Stanley Hauerwas and William H. Willimon. Hosted by the Monday Night Class.

Tuesdays

Lunch Bunch Group
4th Tuesday  |  11:45am  |  Perry Home, Coffee House
This study and information group is sponsored by the United Methodist Women and participates in a variety of studies led by various speakers. A previous study included the book An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch or snack to share with the group.  Led by Nettie Joseph.
