Dorothy Oglesby Stewart Scholarship

Biography

Screen Shot 2014-05-27 at 3.55.10 PMDot Stewart was born in 1921 in Mobile, Alabama. She married Aubrey Lee Stewart in 1941. They had three children – James Robert-Stewart, Linda Kaye Stewart and Lynn Stewart Morris.  Dot was educated at Draughns Business College in Montgomery, received a B.A. in Humanities from the University of West Florida, and a B.A. in Communication Arts from The University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL.

Dot was baptized and grew up in New Hope Methodist Church in Gateswood, Alabama. She taught Sunday School and sang in the choir as a youth. She has been a member of First United Methodist Church for over fifty years. She was a Circle Leader (Women’s Society now known as The United Methodist Women). She taught second grade Sunday school classes for several years. She was Chairman, Self-Study Committee (ordered by the conference, the congregation and minister Bob Dickerson).

She was a member and secretary of Council on Finance and Administration, Alabama-West Florida Conference for four years (she was the first woman ever to serve on the Council) and was Lay Delegate to Annual Conference. Dorothy served as: Member of the Administrative Board; Chairman, Administrative Board (second woman in history of the church to serve in this capacity); Chairman, Long Range Planning Committee (two years); Chairman, Living Trust Committee; Chairman, Staff-Parish Relations Committee; Chairman, Library Committee; Member, Committee on Nominations; Member, Stewardship Committee; Member, 75th Anniversary Committee; Member, “Claim the Dream” capital campaign committee; and was Program Chairman and Teacher in the Wesley Fellowship Class.

Dot died on July 4, 2013.
