Biography

Myrtle Vardaman Salyerds
December 17, 1897 – May 8, 1988

Myrtle Vardaman Salyerds was born December 17, 1897 in Goodwater, AL.  She was educated in the public school systems of Alabama and attended Jacksonville University and Auburn University.  She taught in the public schools in Alabama and in the private school system in Florida.  Myrtle and her husband, E.C. Salyerds, joined First Church in October of 1934.

Myrtle was an outstanding leader in the church, especially in the field of teaching.  She headed up the primary Sunday School department for many years and taught a women’s Sunday School class for over 50 years.  She was a brilliant Bible teacher and a member of the Round Table Sunday School Class and the J.B. Nichols’ Study Group.  She was a member of the United Methodist Women and a charter member of the Violet Garden Club.  Myrtle died May 8, 1988 at the age of 91.
